Recall Results - Absolutely no trace of 0157:H7 E.coli and no cross-species contamination.

October 22, 2020 - Saskatoon Saskatchewan - Carnivora
On June of 2020, Carnivora™ was contacted by Health Canada and informed that some of our products had been statistically linked to an e.Coli outbreak of three people in Western Canada. The outbreak was detected in February of 2020. Carnivora’s response to this news was to initiate a voluntary recall and ask our retailers and the public to return/remove the specific product that could have remained in the Canadian marketplace.

The second stage of the recall involved Health Canada conducting months of random testing of Carnivora™ products across Canada. Since June of 2020, they have conducted comprehensive testing of our products from all regions of the country for multiple bacteria occurrences and cross-species contamination.

On Oct 20th, we conferenced with April Hexemer, the Manager of the Outbreak Management Division and Centre for Food-borne, Environmental and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases (CFEZID) for the Public Health Agency of Canada to learn the results of this testing.

She informed us that the Public Health Agency of Canada completed its report on the alleged outbreak of E.coli 0157:H7 in the Carnivora™ brand of raw pet food. Not surprisingly, all products passed the tests (absolutely no trace of 0157:H7 E.coli). All other bacteria found were well within normal findings for raw, whole animal pet food products. It should also be noted that there was absolutely no bovine/avian cross-contamination.

Additionally, she informed us that based on our own findings while testing our products and the products of others within the industry, Carnivora™ has been invited to join a newly formed task force initiated within a division of Public Health. This task force is mandated to formulate guidelines for all raw pet food manufacturers in Canada. This means that Carnivora™ will be able to continue its role as a leader in the industry, working with the government to set standards for manufacturers all across Canada.

They thanked us for our transparency, cooperation, and partnership while they worked through their investigation. These findings were not unexpected. However, we are delighted with the outcome as this officially closes the investigation with Health Canada.

Below Is The History

On 08 and 10 June 2020, Carnivora™ was contacted by the Public Health Agency of Canada to share that four individuals had been diagnosed with E Coli 0157-H7 between February 14th and May 16th, 2020. Upon their investigation, Public Health Canada has suggested that Carnivora™ brand raw pet food may have been the contaminant as a common product in all four homes. The individuals in question could not produce the packaging nor the product lot/production codes for their product. Regardless, Carnivora™ takes this very seriously. We are in full cooperation with The Public Health Agency of Canada and Health Canada, and we have decided to perform a voluntary recall of the products that were present in these homes.

Please Note!!!! This recall is not about the health of your pet. The digestive system of carnivores is robust and capable of handling ingesting bacteria at levels that could potentially cause problems for humans.

What are we doing moving forward

Carnivora™ takes a great deal of pride in our production processes. As a species specific manufacturer of Whole Animal Diets and Dinners, we mitigate cross contamination between proteins with a rigorous process of cleaning and sanitizing our human-grade food processing equipment between every grind and mix. We only accept healthy, disease-free whole animals direct from farms and process through a Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) inspected abattoir, and we purchase the vegetables for our Dinners (romaine, bok choy, celery, carrots, apples, pears and blueberries) from large grocery wholesalers. This has been our process for over 20 years without incident. That said, we are always striving to improve our processes. Moving forward, we are implementing 2 additional steps within our farm-to-bowl process to double and triple check for specific bacteria, including E Coli.

A note about handling Raw Whole Animal Pet Food

Our Raw Whole Animal Pet Foods are not for human consumption. Our proteins contain animal carcass, meat, bones and organs, and in the case of our Dinners, raw vegetables, including romaine. These are the biologically appropriate raw ingredients for domestic carnivores, but combined, they are not for humans. It is HIGHLY important that the raw food handling guidelines that are on the back of every product we sell are strictly followed:

“Raw Meat products may contain bacteria that could cause illness if mishandled. Wash working surfaces, utensils and hands with hot soapy water after each feeding. Treat as you would any raw meat product. Do not re-freeze once thawed.”

To learn more about bacteria, please see the comprehensive information on our website. The Question of Bacteria.

We are doing this voluntary recall because we take the safety of the public and their pets very seriously. We have all our checks, processes, lot tracking and production date code labelling in place so we have the ability to trace any product we manufacture right to the retailer we supply, then to the customer who bought that product via the date code labelling. We are always striving to improve and will work with Health Canada to identify any areas we can improve upon to ensure everyone’s safety and peace of mind.

We thank you for your understanding in this matter and look forward to continuing to provide your beloved companions with our Fresh Frozen Whole Animal Diets and Dinners.

Regards;
Your Carnivora™ Team
